                1. What is SiFive?
SiFive is a semiconductor company founded in 2015 by the inventors of the RISC-V instruction set architecture (ISA) from the University of California, Berkeley. It’s the leading commercial provider of RISC-V-based processor cores and SoCs (System on Chips).
📍 Headquarters: San Mateo, California, USA
🧠 Founders: Krste Asanović, Yunsup Lee, Andrew Waterman (original RISC-V developers)
🎯 Mission: Democratize access to custom, modern CPU designs using open-standard RISC-V
RISC-V is a free and open-source ISA based on RISC (Reduced Instruction Set Computing) principles. Unlike proprietary architectures like x86 (Intel/AMD) or ARM, RISC-V is royalty-free and customizable, making it ideal for startups, researchers, and large tech companies.
SiFive offers IP cores (like ARM's Cortex series) as well as custom silicon. Major chip families include:
| Series | Target Application | Key Features |
|---|---|---|
| E-Series | Embedded microcontrollers | Low power, small footprint, IoT and MCU tasks |
| S-Series | Embedded Linux systems | Higher performance, suitable for real-time control and lightweight Linux |
| U-Series | User applications and edge computing | 64-bit performance, Linux-ready, multi-core support |
| X-Series | High-performance & AI acceleration | Advanced vector processing, ML/AI optimized |
| Intelligence Series | AI-specific chip IP and SoCs | Built-in AI/ML accelerators, deep learning |
HiFive Unmatched: A development board with a U740 SoC, supports Linux desktop computing
HiFive1 Rev B: An Arduino-compatible dev board using E21 Core
Intel & SiFive: In 2021, Intel and SiFive announced collaboration to integrate RISC-V into Intel foundry services
NASA: Selected SiFive's RISC-V core (R9 Series) for future space missions
