Stroke

What is a Stroke?

A stroke happens when the blood flow to a part of the brain stops or is blocked. When brain cells don’t get oxygen-rich blood, they start to die within minutes. This can cause serious brain damage, disability, or even death if not treated quickly.

⚠️ Main Causes

There are two main types of stroke:

  1. Ischemic Stroke (85% of cases):

    • Caused by a blocked blood vessel (like a clot) in the brain.

    • Most common type.

  2. Hemorrhagic Stroke:

    • Caused by a burst blood vessel that causes bleeding in the brain.

    • More dangerous but less common.

🔍 Symptoms (FAST Test)

Symptom What to Watch For
F - Face drooping One side of the face droops or feels numb.
A - Arm weakness One arm feels weak or numb.
S - Speech difficulty Slurred or strange speech.
T - Time to call emergency Call an ambulance immediately!

🧪 Diagnosis

  • CT scan or MRI to see where and what type of stroke occurred.

  • Blood tests, ECG, and ultrasound may also be done.

💊 Treatment

Depends on the type:

  • Ischemic stroke:

    • Clot-busting medication (must be given within 3–4.5 hours).

    • Surgery to remove the clot (thrombectomy).

  • Hemorrhagic stroke:

    • Surgery to stop the bleeding or repair blood vessels.

    • Medications to reduce brain pressure.
