Recovery Position (Safe Position to Aid Breathing)

Recovery Position (Safe Position to Aid Breathing)

➡️ What is the Recovery Position?

The recovery position is a safe way of laying a person down on their side when they are unconscious but breathing. This position helps keep the airways open, reduces the risk of choking, and allows any fluids (like vomit) to drain from the mouth, helping to prevent choking or suffocation.

🆘 When should you use the Recovery Position?

  • Unconscious but breathing person: If someone is unconscious but still breathing normally, you should place them in the recovery position.

  • If the person is not responding but you can feel their pulse and they are breathing.

  • After performing CPR (if the person starts breathing again).

🛠️ How to place someone in the Recovery Position? (Step-by-step)

  1. Check for responsiveness:

    • Gently tap the person and check if they are responsive. If they don’t respond and you’re sure they are breathing, move to the next step.

  2. Call for help:

    • Call for emergency medical help (911 or local emergency services).

  3. Kneel beside the person:

    • Kneel down next to the person, making sure to be on their side.

  4. Straighten the person’s body:

    • Straighten their legs and place their arm closest to you at a right angle (about 90 degrees).

  5. Place the other arm:

    • Take the person’s other arm (furthest from you) and place it across their chest, so the back of their hand is against their cheek.

  6. Bend the closest knee:

    • Bend the knee of the leg closest to you at a right angle. This helps with stability.

  7. Roll the person towards you:

    • Gently roll the person towards you by pulling on the bent knee, while keeping their head and neck aligned with the spine. The person should be facing down slightly (on their side).

  8. Tilt their head back:

    • Tilt their head back gently to open the airway and make sure their mouth is facing downward to allow fluids to drain.

  9. Monitor the person:

    • Keep checking their breathing and pulse while waiting for medical help to arrive.

🧠 Easy to remember:

  1. Check responsiveness and call for help.

  2. Position the person on their side with one arm under their head and the other across their chest.

  3. Bend the closest knee and roll them towards you.

  4. Tilt the head back to keep the airway clear.
