Sprain (Ligament Injury)

Sprain (Ligament Injury)

➡️ What is a Sprain?

A sprain is an injury to a ligament, which is the tissue connecting bones to each other. It usually happens when a joint is twisted or stretched beyond its normal range, causing the ligament to tear or stretch.

🆘 When do you suspect a Sprain?

  • Pain around the joint (usually ankle, wrist, or knee).

  • Swelling and bruising in the injured area.

  • Limited movement of the joint.

  • Instability or the feeling that the joint is weak or could give way.

🛠️ How to manage a Sprain? (Simple steps)

  1. Rest the injured part.

    • Avoid using the injured joint to give the ligament time to heal.

  2. Apply ice to reduce swelling.

    • Apply ice wrapped in a cloth or an ice pack to the injured area for about 20 minutes every hour during the first 24-48 hours.

  3. Compress the injured area.

    • Use an elastic bandage to wrap the joint (not too tight) to help reduce swelling.

  4. Elevate the injured part (if possible).

    • Raise the injured limb above the level of your heart to help reduce swelling.

  5. Avoid heat during the first 48 hours.

    • Do not apply heat to the injured area as it may increase swelling.

  6. Seek medical help if needed.

    • If pain and swelling persist or if the joint feels unstable, see a doctor for proper treatment.

❗ Important notes:

  • Do not bear weight on the injured joint.

  • Monitor for signs of severe injury, like extreme swelling or inability to move the joint.

  • If the injury doesn’t improve with home care, consult a doctor.

🧠 Easy to remember:

  1. Rest the injured part.

  2. Ice for swelling.

  3. Elevate to reduce swelling.
